Ventura Yolanda Yaxón Martín

Teacher (2023 Fellow)

Community: Caserío El Xolbe, Cantón El Tablón, Sololá, Guatemala
School: Colegio de Educación Básica Impacto, Empoderando Mujeres

Yolanda works as an academic coordinator and math teacher at Impacto School. With extensive leadership training and a passion for empowering young women in education, Yolando provides teaching support to colleagues and is a mentor for young girls. Yolanda hopes that by providing young girls with the necessary tools, she will help them break the cycle of poverty, violence, and stereotypes.

Yolanda’s love of math has led her to pursue a master’s degree in Mathematics Didactics at Universidad San Carlos de Guatemala and become an active member of Mathkind, a network of math educators in rural parts of Guatemala. She has also created math opportunities at the CIMAT (science, engineering, mathematics, art, and technology) fair, and has been invited to provide workshops for math educators supporting their development of essential skills for effective teaching.

As a Maya Kaqchikel woman, Yolanda is passionate about supporting indigenous communities and hopes to develop an inclusive curriculum that is linked to the science of Mayan culture. She is excited to be working with ConnectED because she shares the same vision and believes that education is the key to development and growing the economy. Yolanda is dedicated to helping her students and the community and hopes that she can continue supporting teachers to improve the quality of education for students.

“I love to be a part of this project that supports education since the Impact School is led by women, and indigenous leaders, and designed for indigenous girls and adolescents, which allows us to demonstrate that if the pioneers succeed, the others can also achieve it.”
