Teacher (2023 Fellow)

Community: Huitán, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala
School: Centro de Recursos para la Educación Inclusiva (CREI) del Ministerio de Educación

Carolina works as the Resource Center leader for Inclusive Education, supporting teachers at the municipal level. In addition to leading training for teachers, Carolina also works as a preschool teacher. Carolina is passionate about supporting students with special needs and recognizes there is a current gap in the education system. Teachers are not trained to work with students who have special needs, which leads to frustration and parents not sending their children to school.

Carolina oversees 47 children with special needs at 18 different schools. Approximately half of those students do not attend school because there are no reasonable accommodations for them. Carolina has been granted access to a classroom in Huitán and is hoping to equip it with materials and resources to effectively teach students with disabilities in a way that meets their needs.

“My intention is to help children with special needs who are not receiving an education due to their disability.”
