Community: Parcelamiento Xoquic, San Andres Semetabaj, Sololá, Guatemala
School: Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta Parcelamiento Xoquic

Marcelino is a school principal serving indigenous communities that speak Kaqchikel and K’iche and a member of various community organizations. In the morning, Marcelino works at a state school for primary school students, and in the afternoon, he works at a community school that is a part of the Association of Mayan Educational Centers of Guatemala; a school that emphasizes Mayan culture, the Mayan worldview, and spirituality.

Due to the lack of educational resources, high rates of migration, and malnutrition in his community, Marcelino has many ideas that would benefit his students. He also recognizes a need for technological training for teachers and improved accessibility for individuals with disabilities. Marcelino aims to work with ConnectED to take action and benefit the students and his community.

“In the economic aspect, migration has been one of the reasons for the increase in land prices and labor wages due to the shortage of labor. It has also affected the community sphere, due to the lack of people to integrate into community organizations.”
