Principal and Teacher (2023 Fellow)

Community: Aldea Xejaví, Tecpán, Chimaltenango, Guatemala
School: Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta Aldea Xejaví

Byron has over 20 years of experience in education and currently works as a principal and teacher for middle and high school students. In his free time, Byron supports sports in his community as he believes sports are essential for youth’s physical and fundamental development. Additionally, Byron is a participant in the project “Innovative Knowledge with Technology,” coordinated by the Renacimiento Association. According to Byron, due to family economic challenges, many students have difficulties focusing in school and eventually lose interest in continuing their education. To encourage students to continue learning, Byron offers multiple free courses in a variety of subjects to students.

Byron has learned the powerful impact of empathy and how it can positively impact both his students’ and colleagues’ growth. Byron believes it is important to do what it takes to improve the school, education, and community.

“I am eager to continue with this work to support my community that so badly needs an incentive for deeper economic, educational, family, and social development.”
