Pedro Xeché Ajcabul

Pedro Xeché is a committed teacher and director at Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta Cantón Panabaj from Cantón Panabaj, Santiago Atitlán. With a Bachelor’s degree in Pedagogy and Educational Administration from the University of San Carlos de Guatemala, Pedro’s dedication to education is clear. He started teaching in 2005 and now leads the school, aiming to provide quality education to the predominantly Tz’utujil indigenous community. Outside of work, Pedro engages in community activities, like serving on his Parish Pastoral Council and participating in school-related initiatives. He’s also involved in extracurricular activities, managing a cooperative school and assisting the School Board.

Pedro’s desire to expand his knowledge and establish connections for Escuela Cantón Panabaj’s benefit led him to become a ConnectED Fellow. Despite facing devastation from Storm Stan in 2004, and other ongoing community challenges, Pedro remains committed to providing quality education and nurturing student talents, especially those affected by the tragedy.

Problem: The absence of a dedicated technology center within the school inhibits students from gaining technological skills and accessing a wealth of knowledge available through digital resources and the internet.

Solution: Pedro’s school now features an equipped technology center, complete with a projector, screen, laptop computers, and RACHEL (Open Education Resources). Teachers have undergone comprehensive training on integrating RACHEL into their lessons, leveraging technology to enhance student development and improve technological proficiency. This strategic implementation aims to create a dynamic and engaging learning environment.
