Rosaria Carolina Pérez

Teacher (2023 Fellow)

Community: Huitán, Quetzaltenango, Guatemala
School: Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta Barrio Loma Linda

Carolina is a teacher passionate about inclusive education at Escuela Oficial Rural Mixta Barrio Loma Linda. She also supports the local special education resources center, Centro de Recursos para la Educación Inclusiva (CREI). With a background in bilingual preschool education, her journey includes obtaining a teaching degree which has led her to work in the municipality of Huitan, where she currently supports an Inclusive Education Resource Center (CREI) under the Ministry of Education. In addition to her teaching duties, Carolina actively supports community and extracurricular activities, organizing training sessions for teachers across the municipality to enhance their skills in inclusive education practices.

Carolina became a ConnectED Fellow due to her dedication to supporting children with special educational needs, who often face barriers to accessing quality education due to their disabilities. She hopes to receive support and resources, including materials and digital tools, to create a conducive learning environment for these students.

“My intention is to help children with special needs who are not receiving an education due to their disability.”

Problem: Carolina is responsible for the care and education of 47 children with special needs across 18 different schools. Unfortunately, about half of these students are unable to attend school due to the lack of appropriate accommodations. While Carolina has been allocated a classroom in Huitán, it lacks the necessary materials and resources to provide tailored education to students with disabilities, compromising their learning experience and potential for academic success.

Solution: Through Carolina’s project there is now a well-equipped special education resource center for students with disabilities within her municipality. Taking initiative through her educational project, she transformed a classroom in Huitán into a center of inclusivity. This space, now furnished with a SMART TV, projector, modern desks, and abundant supplies, ensures a tailored educational experience for students with disabilities. Today, this classroom represents accessible education, paving the way for a more inclusive future.
